A feline figure streaks around moonlit trees, running straight through branches in its raw panic. Bright red lines well with blood where twigs and thorns have scarred the sleek golden coat, and frenzied clawmarks score the earth where its paws touch. Just ahead, two figures are dimly illuminated by the multitude of overhead stars. The first is a well- built male, his broad shoulders rippling with muscles. The second, a delicately boned female, is on the ground, her hind right leg twisted at an abnormal angle underneath her trembling body. A cloud shifts away from the moon and reveals the male to have a coat like dark honey, and the female to have a thick silvery brown pelt. The male leans over her, his snowcapped tail twitching anxiously. The first figure, blood nearly soaking her newly revealed golden pelt, shoots towards them. Her jaws part in a wordless cry just as a large fox darts out from the cover of a redberry bush and leaps directly at the two, razor sharp teeth bared in a twisted smile.
Shimmersun awoke with an ear splitting yowl, every fur in her pelt standing on end and her claws digging into the sides of her mossy bed. She had been viciously entangled in a deep nightmare, though she couldn't remember what had happened. The cat hissed through her jaws, her ears flattened against the back of her head. Eyes dark and flashing wildly, she darted out of the Warrior's Den and into the center of WindClan. Silvery moonlight washed over her ruffled pelt, staining it a brilliant silver, and the Deputy arched her back against the frosty night air. The night was unusually cold for the season, and it set her nerves on edge. Kneading her paws against the frozen ground, Shimmer felt an eerie sense of melancholy as her lavender eyes swept over the camp she had called home for as long as she could remember. The lean cat's heart soared as she saw how the Clan had grown, mostly because of her long time best friend, Nightstar. She had felt this same sense of pride when she had watched him be named Leader of the clan he had shown unfaltering loyalty to since his birth, and she made a strong effort to keep that feeling with her.
Just as Shimmer was about to return to her nest for a few more hours' rest, she heard a faint cry from the forest. Dark honey ears twitching, the she- cat's loyalty to the Warrior Code battled fiercely with her sense of goodness, and with a roll of her shoulders, the Deputy loped out into the dark woods.
The moon was shrouded in clouds, and the only light that graced the trees was from the star- freckled sky. Shimmersun cantered between bushes and stumps in search of her target, her weathered pads dancing over damp leaves and her whiskers catching dewdrops from tall blades of grass. Suddenly, a small shape caught the starlight, and Shimmer saw it convulse violently. An icy trickle of dread seeped straight to her core, and the Deputy crossed the space between them in two bounds, her pelt ruffled by a sudden breeze that twisted effortlessly through the tall oaks. A cloud was nudged in the sky and the moon turned her face to WindClan, exposing a delicately boned kit with a matted silver- brown pelt. The kit's front right paw had been marred with large toothmarks, possibly those of a badger or a fox. A ripple went down Shimmersun's spine, and the moonlight cast long shadows across the uneven ground.
The kit opened her tiny mouth and let out a pitiful sound, and Shimmer's heart swelled. Quickly searching for some surface covered in morningrain, the Deputy gently picked a leaf off a rotting log and placed it by the scrawny kit's mouth. Tail lashing anxiously, the golden she- cat guided the poor scrap's mouth to the leaf before she heard a near silent rustle behind them. Whirling around, every nerve suddenly on end as if she had been electrocuted, and she let out a violent snarl. "Go. You do not belong here, on this honorable soil. You have attacked a defenseless kit, and for that there is no excuse." When no sounds of movement were to be heard, she extended her claws and scanned the entire area around herself before turning her back to pad back towards the kit. The leaf was now bare of water, and Shimmersun's whiskers twitched at the ghost of a smile that crossed her muzzle. The golden she- cat turned to find the kit a fresh leaf, only to see a large fox lurking in the shadow of a redberry bush.
Her eyes flashed with a fierce maternal need to protect this kit, who looked so much like her mother, that Shimmer hardly thought twice before leaping at the fox, claws extended, to protect the kit she had never had. Blood of both fox and feline matted coats of gold and red. Shimmer clawed, her vision obscured by the darkness, and heard a howl of pain from the fox. She bit down hard on what she hoped was the neck and raked her claws at the creature's eyes, realizing in a moment of clarity that she was overpowered. If she could would the beast enough, it would retreat to its hole- hopefully far from this kit, at least until a passing patrol could find it. The Deputy let out a cry as she was thrown to the ground, and made one last desperate effort to reach the fox's face. Somehow, she managed to slice its eyes before it closed iron jaws around her neck. As the fox stumbled away into the forest, blinded by the golden cat's claws, the golden Deputy turned to the kit and told her not to be afraid. "StarClan has chosen my destiny." She purred, her life spilling onto the ground below. "When the cats find you, let them know that it was simply my time." An image of Nightstar flashed in her mind, his green eyes kind and gentile. "Tell them to be strong. For the Clan, for StarClan, and for me."
